Problem Sets

Weekly problem sets to reinforce the concepts from the reading as well as the material that we address in class. You’re encouraged to work on the problem sets with fellow students, though you’ll both need to turn in your own work. Problem sets are due every Monday at the beginning of class.

Problem set guidelines:

Remove all paper fringes and staple all pages Problem set number, date, and name should be clearly stated Write or type out all work and calculations for computational questions and provide clear explanations for yes/no questions Problem sets should be neat and easy to read (i.e. not your scratch work) Problem sets are practice. A good problem set will not only have the correct answers, it will be presented in a clean and easily understood way.

Please work through problems 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 15, 16, and 17 in the Exercises at the end of Chapter 1 (the first one is labeled 1.1 on page 43).

Please work through problems 24, 26, 40, and 47 from Chapter 1.

Please work through problems 10, 13, 16, 18, 20, and 24 at the end of chapter 2 and please read the following short piece in the news and answer the following questions.

  1. If you are a scientist that aches to be written up in the newspapers, how might you conduct your analysis to maximize your chances?

  2. As a consumer of media, how might you adjust your interpretation of “new study finds . . ” articles in light of this reading?
